A Brief to the Fascinating World of Vedic Science and Vedanta
APPLIED VEDIC SCIENCE – ADVANCED (VEDANTA)
(SAN8110) - This advanced course delves into the diverse interpretations of the Vedanta, the final portions of the Vedas, by the different schools of philosophy. These schools not only vary in their understanding of the Vedanta, but also in their teachings and view of the world, both here and beyond. The rich dialectical tradition among these schools of Vedanta continues to flourish till this day. By studying and comparing the various ontologies and teachings of these schools, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the intriguing nature of tyhe Vedas.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Applied Vedic Science – Basic (Vedanta)
- The medium of Instruction is Sanskrit
- Only currently enrolled Sanskrit master’s certificate students can register for this course. (MIT-SVS)
- Admission into Master Program in Sanskrit through MIT-SVS
- Completed previous MA Sanskrit Course.
In this Applied Vedic Science – Advanced (Vedanta) Course, students will be introduced to the ontological frameworks proposed by the three schools of Vedanta, namely Advaita, Visistadvaita, and Dvaita, through the study of their primers. Students will be able to:
Understand the different ways in which the same ontological content is presented through the various darsanas, all of which are rooted in the Vedic tradition. Appreciate the differences in language use that the different schools of Vedanta employed in presenting their doctrines.
This course is an elective option for students in the MA in Sanskrit or Masters’ Certificate in Sanskrit program and will be offered in the Spring 2023 quarter. The study of Sanskrit Studies is central to this course. By delving into the complex nature of Vedanta and Vedic science, students will gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy and teachings of the Vedas.
