Exploring Bhagavad Gita: Beginner's Sanskrit Course
The Certificate Program in Bhagavad Gita Through Sanskrit (BGTS) – Beginner Phase is a 60-hour course divided into four quarters, with 1.5 credit hours per quarter, designed for students aged 9th Grade and above who are interested in studying the sacred Hindu text Bhagavad Gita through the Sanskrit language. This is the first phase of a three-part program that comprises the BGTS. No prior knowledge of Sanskrit is required, but students should be familiar with the devanAgari script. The program is delivered in English and is accessible globally through an online platform featuring live virtual classrooms.
The Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 – Beginner Phase course covers a wide range of topics to develop students' understanding of the Sanskrit language, including the recognition of common Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases; the use of pronouns, persons, and numbers; the identification and use of verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms according to the tenses; and the appropriate use of case endings for prepositions. The course also covers additional Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases, and the practice of different forms of adjectives and substantives. Furthermore, students will learn about the grammatical aspects of Bhagavad Gita chapter 1 and 2 and the gender as applied to cardinal and ordinal numbers, the recognition of the building blocks of the language through simple everyday conversation, and the use of prefixes, suffixes, and indeclinables.
The program uses the curriculum and textbooks developed by Samskrita Bharati USA specifically "GeetA-sopAnam" (Part 1) and "GeetA-praveshaH" (Part 1, Volume 1), supplemented with other relevant course content. The BGTS – Beginner Phase is suitable for high school students and adults who are interested in deepening their knowledge of sacred Hindu Text Bhagavad Gita through the Sanskrit language, regardless of their location, and assumes no prior knowledge of the language.
